Firefox 2.0 Firefox 2.0 hacks Firefox 2.0 tips ff 2.0 tips ff 2.0 hacks ff 2.0 hacks and review By: Coldsteal Homepage: www.i-trash.org Twats: http://twatech.org/agentinfo.php?host=coldsteal okay well i don't know if this qualifies as a review but it does have lots of about:config hacks im not really going to explain the hacks but i will put them in the show notes Extensions: when i got ff 2 i was running it on a 64mb p3 695 MHz in xp and it was slow (mainly because my huge 64mb). so what i did was look around for how to slim down the Gui and i found this Extensions called stylish all it did was allow me to install new styles from this site, the site had a "Slim GUI" theme so i installed it lol but i don't know if it really helped cuz i rebooted right after i installed it and upgraded my ram to 256mb i also found another plug in but i didn't install it, maybe some of you want to try it out its called httonly the current version is A proof of concept but what it does is Adds httonly cookie support by encrypting cookies marked as httonly on the browser side, so that Javascript cannot read them. basically its a way to stop cookie stealing through XSS. it wasn't possible to do this in ff pre 2.0 okay now for the about:config hacks i will say the hacks and will also be in the show notes Disabling 3rd party cookies: There used to be an option to disable them in the options dialog box but that was removed in Firefox 2 about:config --> network.cookie.cookieBehavior --> set to 1 Tab scroll: in ff 2 there is now a scrolling feature for the tabs but i think its more of an annoyance because i cant stand to look up and see only 10 tabs and then i have to scroll thro them so here is the about config hack to change it about:config --> browser.tabs.tabMinWidth --> # #=0 it gets rid of the scrolling annoyance #=the lower the # the mor tabs can fit b4 scrolling (i put 0 but 50 probably would be fine for most) Tab close buttons: okay so now in ff the active tab has an [X] instead of all the way on the right like pre 2.0 and i really didn't like this because i would click on a tab it i would accidentally close it so i disabled the [X] but you can also move the [X] to the right like pre 2.0 about:config --> browser.tabs.closeButtons --> # 3=[X] on the far right like pre ff 2.0 2=disable [X] 1=[X] on active tab Session restore: finally Firefox has session restore if it did have it before i don't remember because i used to use this extension called session saver but I don’t have a need for it anymore since its integrated. By default, Ff 2 automatically restores your session if your browser crashes - but this will do it every time you restart your browser normally. the real nice part about this is it will keep all your previous form entries. there are to ways to do this the about:config way and the menu way 1st the about:config way about:config --> browser.startup.page --> 3 okay now the menu way options --> "When Firefox Starts:" --> "Show my windows and tabs from last time" from the drop down menu Limit RAM usage: i was talking to MadRush the other day and he was saying that he uses opera allot more now hes sick of the ram usage in FF so in my 1st twat i did it was about ff and its hunger for my ram and how to correct it but only when its minimized so to add 2 it i have 2 more hacks and with all 3 of them you can tame ff's hunger for your ram. The 2nd addition to my 1st twat is browser.cache.disk.capacity how i understand browser.cache.disk.capacity is how much space ff takes up on your hdd for its cache about:config --> browser.cache.disk.capacity --> # the # by default for me was 5000 but i uped it to 90,000 just play with it till you like it okay now the 3rd addition to my 1st twat is prefetch-next ff has this feature that downloads pages from links it thinks you may click on pages you view, like the top result on Google search. i dont like this because im on dial up and i need all my bandwidth. also the more ff is doing the more your cpu and ram have to take about:config --> network.prefetch-next --> false disable chrome tool tips: okay so i don't like tool tips unless its a new program but after a week it gets real old like in ff when i put my mouse over the favorite icon it says "Drag and drop this icon to create a link to this page" i already know that so i have no use for it so I just disable it about:config --> browser.chrome.toolbar_tips --> false finally spell check okay anyone in the infonomicon irc channel knows i cannot spell one bit so i really like this new spell check feature it highlights any misspelled words and if you right click on them you get spelling suggestion and an option to add them into a dictionary this about:conf hack will add spell checking in input fields as well as text areas about:config --> layout.spellcheckDefault --> 2 In all i really like FF 2.0 but i needed to tame its hunger for my ram and disable a few things but after i did a few about:config hacks i could sit back and surf without any annoyances and without worried about loosing my tabs if it crashes. i really like the new features such as spell check and integrated session restore and all the others i haven't said or found yet my full show notes will be on my site i-trash.org and on twat id like to give shutouts to everyone i met at pnx such as richiefrich, helamonster, xavior2180 and all the info ppl and everyone else i didn't mention lol i cant really remember names after all, I only got 4 hours of sleep while I was there. okay thats it till next time… ooo one last shout out goes to Rachel because shes basically amazing. --[SHOW NOTES]-- FIREFOX 2.0 http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ stylish xpi https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2108/ "Slim GUI" http://userstyles.org/style/show/140 httonly xpi https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3629/ about:config 3rd party cookies: about:config --> network.cookie.cookieBehavior --> set to 1 Tab scroll: about:config --> browser.tabs.tabMinWidth --> # #=0 it gets rid of the scrolling annoyance #=the lower the # the more tabs can fit before scrolling Tab close buttons: about:config --> browser.tabs.closeButtons --> # 3=[X] on the far right like pre ff 2.0 2=disable [X] 1=[X] on active tab Session restore: the about:config way about:config --> browser.startup.page --> 3 okay now the menu way options --> "When Firefox Starts:" --> "Show my windows and tabs from last time" (from the drop down menu) Limit RAM usage:(do all 3) <1st twat hack> 2nd way browser.cache.disk.capacity: about:config --> browser.cache.disk.capacity --> # the # by default for me was 5000 but i upped it to 90,000 just play with it till you like it 3rd way prefetch-next: about:config --> network.prefetch-next --> false disabel chrome tool tips: about:config --> browser.chrome.toolbar_tips --> false spell check: about:config --> layout.spellcheckDefault --> 2
